Okay that Pokemas winter soiree event...REALLY rubbed me the wrong way at one part. On the one hand I do really appreciate them focusing on how hard it is to maintain relationships, especially as adults. Sonia, Nessa and Leon are all super busy with their careers and they haven’t been able to hang out with each other like that. It’s such a relatable topic as an adult myself trying to juggle commitments and also personal relationships. It’s hard and many of us are bound to make missteps and accidentally drive those we care about away. And it can hard to reforge those connections once that wedge is there. So I’m actually really glad that they tackled this in a mostly decent manner.  But what bothered me was one particular line.

This was a bad line in my opinion because it takes away from the true issue at hand. Leon is constantly trying to live up to other people’s high expecations of him. This makes him innately a people pleaser and a workaholic as he tries to me people’s demands.That is absolutely not good and he absolutely does need to be called out about it.  And glad I’m Calyrex read him for that in other parts of his speech to Leon. However saying that him striving in general is an issue because people may struggle is not something Leon can control. He can’t control how others respond to his success and saying that line gives a subtle implication that if Hop/Sonia/Raihan/Nessa/Gloria/others feel bad because he’s doing so well, it’s his fault.

Leon as he stands, is at a very real risk of losing his friends due to all the work he puts in to achieving his dreams. And if he were to lose those friends because he didn’t change his workaholic and people-pleasing ways, that would be 100% on him. However if they leave because of him wanting to strive further like Calyrex’s quote above...well that’s actually on them.  If the wording had been something like “If in your continuing to pursue greater heights without making time for those most dear to you, you may lose them and those connections may not ever reform” I personally wouldn’t have a problem because it addresses Leon’s actual flaws without burdening him with something that’s out of his control.  Compared to other parts of the event where Nessa and Sonia both admit that they’ve been struggling with making time for others. However it doesn’t imply that their success as a gym leader/model and professor is the issue, just their own time management.
